Shirley D. Cunningham

Shirley D. Cunningham, 84, of Amboy, IN passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Kokomo, IN.  Shirley was born in Elkmont, Alabama on August 1, 1935, the daughter of Freddy and Georgia Hargrove Hogan.  She married Loren Cunningham on July 3, 1954 and he preceded her in death on April 13, 2002.

Shirley was a homemaker, she worked as a head cook at Converse Elementary School and as a cashier at Amboy Market.  Shirley was an avid reader, also reading her bible many times over.  Known as the prayer warrior, she prayed for her family every day.  She has been a member of the New Life Church in Kokomo for many years and their prayer chain till the end.  A woman of faith who was always ready to serve others.  She made countless breads and meals for others in her past years.  In her retirement years, Shirley and Loren enjoyed camping and trail walking throughout Indiana’s state parks.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her loving family.

Surviving are her children Gary Cunningham of Swayzee, IN, Allen (Katie) Cunningham of Jonesboro, IN, Terry (Deborah L.) Cunningham of Peru, IN and Susan (Ron) Carr of Rochester, IN; sisters Pauline Fox, Annette Correa, Janice Wimmer, Diana Carter and a brother, Fred Hogan; grandchildren Beth (Dennis) Watson, Jacklyn (Brad) Meyer, Rachelle (Steve) Reese, Arrick (Tiffany) Burke, Melissa (Lucas) Bradford, Sandra (Joel) Cash, Karen (Aaron) Galvin, Curtis (Angie) Cunningham, Kristopher (Missy) Bright and Amanda Bright.  26 great-grandchildren and two very special friends, Janet Graham and Harriet Merkert.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings Bobbie Hogan, Ruth Whelchel, a dear daughter-in law Deborah Cunningham and granddaughter Samantha Burke

A service celebrating the life of Shirley D. Cunningham will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home, 201 N. Main St. Amboy, IN, with Pastor Steve Eckart Officiating.  Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery in Amboy, IN.  Family and friends will gather from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 5, 2020 and also 1 hour prior to the service on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made through Laird-Eddy Funeral Home to the Amboy Fire Department.
