Scott James Poor, 66, of Peru, passed away at 4:02 P.M., Friday, August 2, 2024, at his residence. He was born in Peru, on April 21, 1958, the son of James and Barbara (Engel) Poor. Scott married Norma Hanger at the McGrawsville United Methodist Church on August 20, 1994. Scott had a great love and dedication to God, his family, country, and neighborhood and was an active member of the McGrawsville Community Church. He was a 1977 graduate of Maconaquah High School where he played football and was active in the FFA and was a 10-year member of 4-H. Scott was a member of the Richvalley Lions Club and an avid deer hunter. He was active in the Boy Scouts with Andrew, and served as a baseball, basketball and football coach for his boys. He also continued his father’s legacy of making Poor Farm Country Candy’s brittle at Christmas time. He was an IU basketball fan and very interested in politics. Scott was employed with Civil Service at Grissom ARB and a US Air Force Reserve Veteran. He enlisted in 1983 in munitions for the A-10’s with the 930th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, then he retrained in aircraft maintenance for the KC-135’s in the 434th Air Refueling Wing. His military decorations include the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Arm Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal and the Air Force Reserve Medal. Scott is survived by his wife, Norma, and his children: Matthew Poor and his wife Alexandra of Sweetser, IN, Brianne Whitman and her husband Seth of Mitchell, IN, and Andrew Poor of Peru; grandchildren Jericho Poor and Iris Poor; sisters Meredith Shoemaker and her husband Michael of Livingston, TX, and Debra Rice and her husband Ed of Winter Haven, FL; brothers-in-law Wayne Wyatt of Poland, IN, and Johnnie Hanger and his wife Karen of Silver Lake, IN, and sisters-in-law Ruth Fair of Peru, and Arlene Barrow of Magnolia, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara and Jim Poor, his in-laws Mary and Ray Hanger, and sister-in-law Donna Hall. A service celebrating the life of Scott Poor will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 11, 2024, at the McGrawsville Community Church with Pastors Greg Hiatt and Ryan Ramsey officiating. Family and friends will gather from 12 Noon Sunday till service time at the McGrawsville Community Church. Military Graveside Services will be provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit and the Wright-Patterson AFB Honor Guard at 9:00 A.M., Monday, August 12, 2024, at the Marion National Cemetery, Marion, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home to INUMC Camp Rivervale or McGrawsville Community Church.
