Richard “Dick” William Hammersley, 84, of Peru passed away at 6:47 AM, Monday, October 23, 2023, at Parkview Wabash Hospital. He was born in Lebanon, IN on October 24, 1938, the son of Dr. William and Georgia (Jackson) Hammersley. On June 8, 1969, Dick married Andrea Hillyer and she survives.
Dick spent his childhood in Frankfort, IN and participated in many Scouting activities where he attained Eagle Scout status. A U.S Army Veteran, he did a two-year tour in Berlin, Germany and during his travels around Europe, he collected 1800 slides of all of his travels.
Dick was a loving husband, father and grandfather and spent all of his non-working hours attending all of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. In doing so, he became his children’s personal videographer, filming many tapes of 4-H, wrestling, baseball, horse shows and circus performances. He was a big fan of the Peru Amateur Circus.
Ever a people person, he loved to meet new people and would introduce his wife and explain, “She’s a lot country and I’m a lot Rock and Roll”.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Andrea, are his sons Dr. Brad Hammersley of Peru and Rev. Jason Hammersley and his wife Susan of Aiken, SC and his grandchildren Kaleb Hammersley, Rachel Hammersley, Lucas Hammersley and Sam Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Diana Blakley.
A service celebrating the life of Richard “Dick” William Hammersley will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 28, 2023, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, IN with Pastor Mark Perry officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Family and friends will gather from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home and will conclude with a Masonic Service at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made through the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home to the First Presbyterian Church or to Circus City Festival Inc.
