Mary M. (Stewart) Lawrence

Mary Margaret Lawrence (Stewart), 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in North Manchester, Indiana on September 27, 2021. Mary was born on July 25, 1924 in Peru, Indiana where she lived most of her life.

Mary was a graduate of Peru High School and went on to spend 35 years (1944-1979) as a loyal employee of Indiana Bell (later AT&T). She married her husband Herbert L. Lawrence, Peru, on Christmas Day in 1949. They had two daughters, three granddaughters and five great grandchildren and enjoyed 70 loving years together before Herb's passing in 2020. She was a loving wife and mother and an active grandmother who is remembered for all of the big and little ways she showed her love to them every day.

She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, quilting, reading and baking pies and homemade noodles for her family, friends and church family. Mary was an active, life-long member of the Peru Church of the Brethren. She joined the church on a mission trip to Honduras in 1997 and volunteered in her local community throughout her life, including as a hospital volunteer.

Mary is survived by her two daughters, Lynn (the late Rick) Truitt and Lesa (David) Noonan; her grandchildren, Angela (Chris) Lawson, Maggie (Neal) Young, and Molly (Jared) Zentz; and her great-grandchildren, Kylee and Kaiden Lawson and Brooks, Finley and Sloane Young.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herb and his loving family who became her own, her father William J. Stewart, Sr. and her mother Cleta Marie Gable, who died when Mary was only four years old. She was also preceded in death by her elder brother William J. Stewart, Jr. and her loving grandparents, William L. Stewart and Margaret Stephens who cared for her much of her childhood. The family is comforted in knowing she has been reunited with her family in heaven.

A service celebrating the life of Mary Lawrence will be held at the Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, 411 N. Grant Street, Peru, Indiana on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 2:00PM with Pastor Phil Troxell officiating.  Friends and family will gather for visitation at 1:00PM until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the Peru Church of The Brethren.
