Mary E. Christner, 98, of Peru, IN, passed away at 4:27 AM, Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Century Villa Health Care in Greentown, IN. She was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on October 20, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Isabel Troyer. Mary married Weldon Christner on April 14, 1950, and he preceded her in death on August 16, 1979. Mary graduated from Converse High School. She worked as a cook and a homemaker. She was a member of the Garden Club and volunteered at Dukes Memorial Hospital in the Ladies Auxiliary. Mary loved gardening, participating in church, singing, and most of all her family, including her extended family. She was known for her hospitality and kind heart, nurturing of family, friends, strangers, and plants. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed cheering on her teams and her grandchildren in their sports endeavors. Mary was a strong woman of great faith, and her faith and love for her family brought her through adversity and loss. Mary is survived by her daughter Elizabeth (Mike) Helms of Peru, son-in-law David Powell of Miami County; grandchildren Michael (Ashantae) Powell of Bunker Hill, Katie (Jeremiah) Schloemer of Kokomo; great-grandchildren Grace Powell, Lennon Powell, and JT McMillen; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Weldon, her daughter Diane Powell, her brother Robert Troyer Jr., and her sister Majorie Young. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM on Friday, September 27, 2024 at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home: 201 N Main St., Amboy, IN. A service celebrating the life of Mary Christner will be held at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Jackson Moore officiating. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery directly after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kokomo Rescue Mission.
