Obituary

John J. “Jack” Strank, (LTC, USAF, ret), 92, formerly of Peru, Indiana passed away at 10:02 PM, Sunday, November 6, 2022, at Traditions at Regan Park, Avon, IN.  He was born in Johnstown, PA on August 12, 1930, the son of John and Marcia (Chokran) Strank. On August 8, 1953, Jack married Mary Louise Harkabus in Lilly, PA and she survives.

Jack served in the US Air Force for more than 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1972. His military decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Reserve Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Longevity Medal.

Jack’s greatest joys in life were his wife and family and his Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church and an active volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul. He was a regular volunteer at the Grissom Air Museum in Peru for many years, as well. In his spare time, he enjoyed wood working, house projects and he was an avid reader. He also loved Notre Dame football and enjoyed taking family and friends to the games during the 50 years he had season tickets.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 69 years, Mary, are daughters Kathryn Mary (Joseph) Herr of Brownsburg, IN, Susan Lynn Gregov of Mesa, AZ, Cheryl Ann Hahn of Denver, CO and Lisa Marie (Brent) Goebel of Greenwood, IN; grandchildren Louie (Anna) Herr, Alayna Herr, Amy Johnson, Jordan (Nicole) Hahn, Joe Hahn, Michael Goebel, and Jack Goebel; and great-grandsons Jack Herr, Colin Hahn, and Sam Hahn. He was preceded in death by his parents, son John J. Strank, grandson Justin M. Hahn, brother Joseph M. Strank, and sister Mary C. Vettori.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of John J. Strank will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, December 2, 2022, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 W. 5th St., Peru, IN with Rev. Adam Mauman officiating. Burial will be in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Family and friends will gather from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Friday at the St. Charles Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made through the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, IN to St. Vincent De Paul.
