Jan Martin Obituary

Gary Jan Martin, 79, of Amboy, IN passed away at 6:50 PM,  Friday, November 5, 2021 at Rolling Meadows Health and Rehab Center, LaFontaine, IN. He was born in Peru on January 4, 1942 the son of Gareth and Irene Rimpler Martin. Jan married Sierra McKinley on June 16, 1962 and she survives.

Jan was a member of College Corner Brethren Church and a member of Gideon International. His Christian walk was apparent as he regularly helped others, treated everyone with love and respect and served as a Sunday School teacher over the years. He graduated from Jefferson Township High School (Mexico) in 1960 “Go Bulldogs!”, International Business College in Fort Wayne, IN, Huntington College and received his master’s degree in education from Ball State University.

Jan was an Eagle Scout and thoroughly enjoyed nature and outdoor activities including bicycling, canoeing, jogging and walks in the woods. Old cemeteries, many of which he mowed over the years and local history were of great interest to him as well.

He also enjoyed sports with basketball definitely being his favorite. His teaching and coaching career, which spanned 22 years, started in Laurel, IN and included 14 years at Oak Hill Junior High School as well as a few years at Whites Junior/Senior High School and Peru Junior High School. Jan and his wife Sierra also managed a successful record album business for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife Sierra is daughter Daphne Hudson and her husband Mark of Russiaville, sons Joel Martin and his wife Debbie of Converse and Rob Martin and his wife Tracy of Amboy; sisters Cynthia Leffel of Mexico, IN and Cathy (Bill) Click of Denver, IN; brother Phil (Julia) Martin of Morehead, KY; grandchildren Ashley (Matt) Troy, Amber Hudson (Corey Humbert), Amy (Chip) Ziems, Jace (Kendall) Martin, Braelyn Martin, Shaye (Jose) Nieves, Marlie (Caleb) Newhouse, Finley Martin, Terra Martin, Trevor (Bekah) Martin, and Renn Martin; great grandchildren Tillie Ziems, Lilah Ziems , Grady Martin and Hattie Martin and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Gareth and Irene Martin and daughter-in-law Diana Martin.

A service honoring the life of Gary Jan Martin will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the College Corner Brethren Church, 8996 S. 500 W., Wabash, IN with Rev. Richard Martens officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico, IN. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, Friday, November 12, 2021 at College Corner Brethren Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the College Corner Brethren Church or Gideons International.
