James Sullivan Obituary

James N. Sullivan (Retired Indiana State Police Master Trooper), 79, of Peru passed away at 8:28 AM, Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at his residence. He was born in Miami County on December 5, 1941 the son of Nelson and Helen Bradley Sullivan. Jim married Mary Ann Phillips at St. Charles Catholic Church on July 27, 1963 and she survives.

 

Jim was a 1959 graduate of Bunker Hill High School, a 1962 graduate of Indiana College of Mortuary Science and a 1965 graduate of the Indiana State Police Academy at Indiana University. He served as an Indiana State Trooper from 1965 to 1987. In 1978 Jim won a Shooting Marksmanship Award after a competition among all District 23 post personnel. In 1980 he received the Eagle Award at the state police post for recovering the most stolen vehicles in the district.

 

In addition to his duties as a state trooper Jim also spent countless hours with his father on the family farm which was established in 1847. Jim was the fifth generation to farm the land. Family was very important to Jim and he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

 

He was fondly known as “Grampy Hoosier” by his granddaughters. They loved to sing rock and roll with grandpa and tell him to “Turn on the Hemi.” He had a great sense of humor and a witty saying for every aspect of life.

 

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary Ann are daughters Sandra (Donald) Lindholm of St. John, IN and Teresa Sullivan of Kokomo, IN; grandchildren Jennifer Lindholm and Kelly Lindholm and a sister Diann Sutton and her husband Dee of Peru. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Matthew Lindholm.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of James N. Sullivan will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the St. Charles Catholic Church 58 W. 5th St., Peru with Rev. Gustavo Lopez officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery.
