James A. Stockdale (CSMAJ, USMC, Retired), 88, of Peru, passed away at 8:12 P.M., Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at Blair Ridge Health Campus. He was born in Mexico, IN on January 25, 1937, the son of James W. and Iris (Hendricks) Stockdale. Jim married Linda Chou on November 29, 1980 and she survives. Jim was a member of the Mexico Church of the Brethren and upon graduation from Jefferson Township High School in 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He served in the Marine Corp for more than 23 years, retiring as a Command SGT Major in 1978. Jim was a Vietnam Veteran and his Military decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Rep of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, the Rep. of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the Rep. of Vietnam Campaign Medal. In 1978 Jim returned to Peru and owned and operated Dunn Jenkins Abstract Company until his retirement in 1992. Jim was a member of the Peru Maennerchor and Miami County VWF Post 2067. Jim was well known for his dynamic personality and perpetually sharp wit. In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by his sons James H. Stockdale of St. Petersburg Beach, FL, William K. Stockdale of Fairfax, VA and James Gaunt of Peru and a daughter Sherrie Johnson of St. Louis, MO; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Keith Stockdale. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 15, 2025 at Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico, IN with Pastor David Beebe officiating. Military Honors will be provided by members of the Miami County Military Rites Unit and the US Marine Corp. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mexico Church of the Brethren.
