Hobert Smyth Obituary

Hobert W. Smyth, age 98, of Peru, Ind., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 8, while in the presence of his family.  He was born October 6, 1923, in Pryse, Ky., the son of Donnelly and Bertha (Samples) Smyth. After school, Hobert worked as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hobe then answered his nation’s call for duty with the Army during World War II, serving in the Asia Pacific Campaign until our country’s victory in the conflict. His military decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

After the war he moved to Peru where he met and married his wife of 67 years, Laura Jean (Grant) Smyth, and they lived in Peru for their entire marriage. He had two children, Joyce A. (Smyth) Hughes and her husband Terry, Peru, and Gregory A. Smyth (deceased) and wife Tammy. During this time, Hobert worked at Eberts Machine Shop, Peru; H.A. Thrush and Company, Peru; Anaconda Wire & Cable Company, Marion, Ind., and Hughes Auction Service, Peru.

In addition to his parents, wife and son, Hobert was predeceased by nine brothers and sisters including Ottis “Bren” Smyth, Peru, and Ernest “Ned” Smyth, who frequently visited family in Peru. Surviving siblings are Audrey (Smyth) Merritt, Covington, La., Alfred Smyth, Joliet, Ill., and Bill Smyth, Clay City, Ky.  Also preceding Hobert in death was his great grandson Owen Hughes.

Surviving is a daughter-in-law Karen (Butler) Smyth and grandchildren Nina (Hughes) White and husband, Tim, Peru; Richard Hughes and his wife, Missy, Peru; Samantha Smyth, Peru; Nichole (Smyth) Wilson, and her husband, Tom, Carmel; and Brandon Smyth, and his wife Laura, Peru. Surviving great grandchildren include Alexandra, Kate, and Austin White; Wyatt and Maggie Hughes; Sloane and Taliya Smyth; Rhys and Finn Wilson and Bryce and Chloe Smyth.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Peru Grace Brethren Church on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with internment following the service at Ever Rest Memorial Park, Logansport, Ind. with Military Rites provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St. Peru. Memorial contributions may be made to Peru Grace Brethren Church or the Miami County Military Rites. The service will be livestreamed through Facebook at Peru Grace Brethren Church.
