George Thomas Bergman passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, August 25, 2024. He was born on January 28, 1927, in Howard County, Indiana to Otto Henry and Lavada Ellen (Graham) Bergman. He was the 9th of eleven children. George graduated from Kokomo High School midterm in 1945 so that he could join the Coast Guard and serve with his brothers in the South Pacific during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Kokomo Business College in 1949. He married Beverly Susann Fisher on July 24, 1949. They had two children Susan Jane Neher and George Thomas Bergman, Jr. He married Norma (Rabe) McGuire in 1974. She passed away in August 1983. At the time of his death, he had a long term, 29 years, close friend, Sandra Biddle. He delivered dairy products for Med O Bloom Dairy in Kokomo and owned a roller rink and miniature golf course in Logansport before pursuing a management career in the furniture business. He started as secretary-treasurer for Canterbury House in Peru, co-owned Deutsch-Eck with Einer Eck in Chicago, and , worked in sales for Hauske Harlan and Woodcrest. Even in his nineties he did work for Dwight Dillman enterprises. George believed in community service. He served on the Peru City Council. He was on the Peru school board when the new Peru High School was built. He volunteered with the Veterans Administration driving veterans to doctors’ appointments when he was in his 80’s for ten years. George was an active member of the Peru Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. He also belonged to the Rotary, Moose Lodge, Order of the Elks, and the American Legion. He liked golfing, fishing with family, watching the St. Louis Cardinals, and Purdue sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Susann and Norma; six brothers and their wives, Raymond and Verna, Robert and Mary Helen, Bruce and Joan, Richard and Helen, Roy and Alice, Ralph and Linda (who survives); three sisters and their spouses, Mary Kathyrn and Raymond Patchett, Helen and Fred Stockdale, Virginia and Noah Bennett and one sister Dorothea Bergman. Survived by his daughter Susan and her husband Mike Neher; his son George Thomas Bergman, Jr. and his wife Marie, his brother Ralph’s wife Linda, his long term close friend Sandra and many nieces and nephews and their families. A service celebrating the life of George T. Bergman will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 7, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church 102 W. Main St., Peru, IN. with Pastor Mark Perry officiating. Family and friends will gather from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by members of the Miami County Military Rites Unit. In lie of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
