Gilbert N. Summers, 92, of Peru passed away on April 3. To all who knew and loved him he was known as Bill. Growing up, he lived with his family on North Broadway, from where he would walk to school at Ridgeview Elementary. Bill later graduated from Peru High School and Indiana University before serving as a military police officer in the US Army during the Korean War. Following the war, Bill returned to Peru where he married his high school sweetheart and became a devoted family man. Bill’s career as an excellent businessman began when he went to work in his father’s insurance agency. After his father’s untimely death in 1957, Bill successfully carried on the business and grew the agency until his retirement in 2018. As an engaged Peru citizen, Bill served on several boards, including First Federal Savings and Loan, Dukes Hospital, and Mount Hope Cemetery. He was a member of the Elks and Kiwanis. Bill’s care and compassion for the community was also evident for many years during winter months when he used his four-wheel drive truck to plow residents’ driveways and deliver for Meals on Wheels. Playing golf and exploring the country along its backroads were two of Bill’s hobbies. But his favorite pastime might have been mowing grass. He spent many happy hours mowing and took great pride in his well-tended yard. Bill’s family invites friends to join them in celebrating his life at a gathering from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 6, at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 West Main Street in Peru. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, April 7, at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through Eikenberry-Eddy to St. Charles Catholic Church, the Miami County YMCA, and The Children’s TherAplay Foundation Inc. of Carmel, IN.
