Fr. Douglas Hungerford Obituary

Father Douglas E. Hungerford, 66, Pastor Emeritus of the Anglican Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity in Peru, Indiana, passed away at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent in Kokomo. He was born in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 1959, the son of Eugene and Sophie Bien Hungerford. He is survived by his sisters, Virginia (Terry) Witzky, Warsaw, Indiana, and Hope H. Grant, Wheaton, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.

Fr. Hungerford graduated from Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He went on to receive a Master of Divinity from Nashotah House in Nashotah, Wisconsin, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1994.

Before entering the priesthood, he worked as a music producer and sound engineer for the University of Iowa and Universal Recordings in Chicago. A gifted musician, he spoke Latin and was proficient in the violin, oboe, and English horn. He had a deep love for classical music and Gregorian chant. His fondness for all things English was well known, and he often reminisced about his time studying in Cambridge, England. He became a true tea connoisseur and delighted in teaching others how to brew tea “properly,” just as he had learned there.

Fr. Hungerford served parishes in Peru, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky; Cleveland, Ohio; and at the Anglican Catholic Cathedral in Indianapolis, Indiana. An avid reader and accomplished scholar, he welcomed every opportunity to share his knowledge of Scripture. He was known for his thoughtful, detailed responses to biblical questions and found great joy in teaching and discussing matters of faith. He also enjoyed collecting canes and walking sticks, hats of all kinds, and unique wooden pipes.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Fr. Douglas E. Hungerford will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 58 West 5th Street, Peru, with Fr. Kyle Neterer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Barnabas Church Cemetery in Temple Hills, Maryland.
