Donald C. Schrader, 93, formerly of Peru passed away at 3:35AM, Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at his residence in Fort Wayne. He was born in New Haven, Indiana on March 21, 1927, the son of Walter and Helen Vachon Schrader. Don Married Beverly Merchant on April 13, 1949 and she preceded him in death on January 21, 1993. He married Kate Smith Scherrer on December 25, 1996 and she survives.
A member of America’s Greatest Generation, Don served with the United States Coast Guard-Merchant Marines during WWII. His military decorations include the American Campaign Medal, Asian Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
Don was employed as a salesman for the Peter Eckrich Company until his retirement in 1989. He was a life member of the American Legion, Moose and the Knights of Columbus. Don was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church, Fort Wayne and a former member of the St. Charles Catholic Church in Peru.
Don is survived by daughters Linda (Bob) Schussler of Indianapolis, Pat Williams of Galveston, IN, Barbara Keyes of Peru and Cindy (Dave) Stevens of Peru, a son Robert (Lisa) Schrader of Peru, sisters Mary Merckx and Jeanette Durbin, step-children, Thomas E. Scherrer, Sandra K. Weikel, Robert K. Scherrer, Karen S. Bushey and Jacob D. Scherrer eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beverly, son-in-law’s John Williams and Ray Keyes, brothers, John Schrader, Paul Schrader and Richard Schrader and sisters, Irene Ferrier and Marge Moore.
A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Donald C. Schrader will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at the St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 W. 5th St. Peru, IN. with Reverend Adam Mauman officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Miami County Military Rights Unit. Family and friends will gather from 5:00-7:00PM Friday August 7, 2020 at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main, Peru, IN. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00PM, Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home to the St. Charles Catholic Church.
