Burt Freeman Garber, 96, of Converse, passed away at 5:25 P.M., Monday, August 1, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Converse, on December 31, 1926, the son of Ralph Evert and Bessie Edna Loy Garber. Burt married Mary Belle Anderson on May 15, 1948, and she preceded him in death on February 27, 2018.
Burt was a 1944 graduate of Converse High School and served during WWII in the US Navy on the USS Armadillo and the USS Waukesha. His military decorations include the American Area Ribbon, the WWII Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 103. Burt retired at the age of 62, after a career of bridge building across the state of Indiana.
Burt is survived by his daughters Kay Arlene (Richard) Mobley of Converse and Jane Ann Mitchell of Converse; daughter in law Laurie Garber of Amboy; grandchildren Chris (Missy) Mobley, Heidi (Allen) Miller, Sara (Dustin) Fowler and Ashley Mitchell; 13 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Belle, a son Michael Garber, grandchildren Kristy Mobley Osthimer and Judson Mitchell, great-grandchild Anabelle Burton and siblings Betty Haynes, Hurbert, Franklin, and Donald Garber.
A Celebration of Life for Burt F. Garber will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 P.M., Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the Masonic Lodge #601, 104 N. Madison St., Converse, IN.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Converse Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 47, Converse, IN 46919.
